King Charles III Memorial Sovereign 2022

Picture
Picture
The first Sovereign to be issued during the Reign of King Charles III, this Memorial Sovereign features the new Kings official portrait, created by sculptor Martin Jennings and the reverse has an elaborate and extremely pleasing interpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms by Jody Clark. The proof Sovereign range contains the Quarter, Half, Full, Double and Quintuple Sovereigns along with a Piedfort and Brilliant Uncirculated Quintuple Sovereign.

Martin Jennings

Martin Jennings, an accomplished sculptor revealed his Charles III portrait in September 2022 (on the circulation 50p). It could be described as a life like, although rather plain portrait of the King and following tradition, the portrait faces left (Elizabeth II's facing right). The Legend changes slightly from that of Elizabeth II's coinage, with REX (King) replacing REGINA (Queen).

Jody Clark

Jody Clark's (best known for his Elizabeth II 5th Portrait) interpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms is somewhat more elaborate than that of Timothy Noad's interpretation (which featured on the Platinum Jubilee Sovereign range). The notable difference being the intricate pattern in the background, with the floral emblems of England (rose), Scotland (thistle) and Ireland (shamrock) in the lower field.

Chief coin of the world

Dating back to 1489 and since its revival in 1817, the Sovereign has played its part as a circulating coin, a bullion coin and, most recently, a commemorative coin.
